"All changes, even the most longed for
have their melancholy
for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves
we must die to one life before we can enter another"

This is a beautiful shot in your excellent b/w. I love the light in the darkness. Excellent treatment and composition.

Excellent title and the perfect quote to go with your very melancholy image, Sharon. Well done on all accounts.

It is time of fog, dense black, average light and halftones. A photo wonder.
Warm greetings

It's like days, each one dies to let the other one begins, and it should be as easy (even if it's not ;) Love your inimitable atmosphere, the softness of the right part where people slowly disappear (yet together) and the great tree (fond of its shape) separating & joining together those 2 halves with the left part beautiful lighted with life going on, indoors, like a big boat on the ground. Beyond the fog, i read melancholy also in the double lamp posts fading slowly on the right when light stands clearly on the left... Yes, everything changes, that's Life's movement (when no movement at all is the end of Life). Let's go slowly but surely. Have a nice wedn., dear*

A softly foggy, moody image...but the lights in the windows
keep this one from being melancholy to me.
There is a warmth and I feel I want to go in and investigate this building.

The '20's modernist style of that building and the clogging effect of the fog create such a strong atmosphere here . . even the most innocent silhouette takes on a hint of menace ! A classic for sure.

My eyes are kept on the tree. The tree produces the melancholic mood, I think.
13 Oct 2010 9:03am
You have grabbed the esence of this feeling very well. Good job. I only miss a bit more contrast, but that is only my taste :)
13 Oct 2010 10:47am
Wow, wonderful mood and very pleasing composition here--really great!

It's those "ghousts" moving toward the vanishing point (end of the tunnel...) that makes the scene melancholic for me. You think Patrick Swayze is amongst them?
13 Oct 2010 12:56pm
Wonderful moody shot that makes me think of the coming short days of winter.
13 Oct 2010 1:07pm
I like the balance of this composition, though I might wish that the left and right lightpoles were perpendicular to the horizon.
13 Oct 2010 2:52pm
Foggy, moody...excellent atmosphere!
13 Oct 2010 3:02pm
Wonderful mood. Love the tiny figures heading out into the fog.
13 Oct 2010 4:09pm
Digging the fog and the dark blobs of figures to the right. Peaceful shot.
13 Oct 2010 4:52pm
Stunning image . This mood brings somehow tears to my eyes ! Or this is just my mood today !
13 Oct 2010 8:12pm
this is a great title, very fitting for this kind of scene...
13 Oct 2010 9:30pm
A foggy, lonely scene in spite of the people in the frame. The tree gives it that bleak look. Nicely done.
14 Oct 2010 2:20am
Even in such a moody and foggy weather, all is in great details!! The tree stands at a very good position in the photo!
14 Oct 2010 2:22am
k@ pinned it. Nothing more to add than nodding my head in approval :)
14 Oct 2010 5:39am
There is a lot of "storytelling" to find out in this moody picture and lyrics. k@:s words, as 6ft5 says, are really good (as always) and I agrre. But there are certainly more possible interpretations in this brilliant and atmospheric picture.

the leaves have fallen down - only the autumn fog remained ...this could be the final picture in a B/W movie - very good photo
14 Oct 2010 7:23pm
Wonderful mood you've captured/created. Love the light.
14 Oct 2010 11:52pm
A deep B/W , I like the feeling around this shot , Phil.
15 Oct 2010 9:30am
you have captured a very sinister and ethereal mood here, a kind of beautiful melancholy
15 Oct 2010 11:55am
Fabulous B&W with perfect tone. The tree in particular makes the shot for me.
15 Oct 2010 2:47pm
A superb atmosphere - probably a little prescient of what we have to look forward to!
15 Oct 2010 7:27pm
It's like a horror movie where the bad guys are coming out the darkness ...
Great shot !
16 Oct 2010 11:11am
A wonderful mood, tonal range and processing...love the words:)
16 Oct 2010 5:20pm
Nice, clean night shot. The lights are really soft. (Your talk of food on twitter made me hungry:-)
17 Oct 2010 3:26am

"The magic of a melancholy tear in your eye" (Tom Wiats)
Lights like needles shining in the fog. Illuminating but it's just a hint. Branches like fingers reaching for a misty sky. Revealing not too much. Feels like stepping in & stepping out all at the same time. Brilliant piece of art, Sharon! All the best & safe travels, Fritsch.
19 Oct 2010 7:11am
great mood - I like the misty background

such a gorgeous shape to that tree and the stairway arch. and you've organized such a beautiful balance of shapes and thick foggy spaces in this frame. and of course it's a delight to see this place. i haven't thought about it for ages.
